Give your puppy the best possible start with supportive training that builds confidence, communication, and positive habits from the very beginning.
Dogs experience the world primarily through their sense of smell. Scentwork training taps directly into that natural ability, giving dogs a purposeful and rewarding activity where they can use their nose to locate hidden scents.
Scentwork is suitable for dogs of all breeds, ages, and abilities. It provides mental stimulation, builds confidence, and strengthens the bond between dog and owner as you work together as a team.
At Cumbria Canine Services, our scentwork training is inspired by detection dog training used by professional working dogs, adapted into a fun and accessible activity for pet dogs and their handlers.
Scentwork offers far more than just a fun activity — it provides real mental and emotional benefits for dogs.
Searching for hidden scents encourages problem-solving and concentration. This mental workout leaves dogs feeling calm, satisfied, and fulfilled.
Every successful search builds confidence. For nervous or rescue dogs especially, scentwork provides a safe way to explore and succeed.
Many dogs have strong natural instincts to hunt, track, or search. Scentwork channels those instincts into a positive activity shared with their owner.
Scentwork is a true partnership where the dog leads the search and the handler learns to observe and trust their dog’s signals.
Sniffing activates the brain’s seeking system, helping dogs relax and regulate their emotions.
Because scentwork relies on instinct rather than physical ability, it works for puppies, senior dogs, and dogs with mobility limitations.
Our scentwork training focuses on developing two key skills — searching and indication — before bringing them together into structured scent detection work.
We begin by developing your dog’s natural desire to search. Using engaging searches with food or toys, dogs learn that using their nose leads to something rewarding.
Each dog works for the reward they find most motivating. For some this may be food, while others prefer toys. Discovering what motivates your dog is part of the fun and helps build strong enthusiasm for the search.
Once dogs are confident searching, we teach them how to clearly communicate when they have located the target scent.
All dogs begin by searching for a red Kong, and for some dogs we may initially use a tennis ball to help shape the behaviour.
The goal is a calm and reliable indication that clearly tells the handler the scent has been found.
Once your dog has developed strong searching behaviour and a clear passive indication, we begin combining these skills.
Dogs learn to search areas methodically and confidently, using their nose to work the space with purpose. When they locate the scent, they perform their trained indication so the handler knows the find has been made.
As training progresses, additional scents such as clove or gun oil can be introduced for those interested in competition-style scentwork.
Tracking and mantrailing allow dogs to follow a specific scent trail left by a person or animal.
These activities build on a dog’s natural scenting ability and offer a fascinating insight into how dogs interpret scent trails in the real world.
Tracking sessions provide a rewarding challenge for both dog and handler, encouraging teamwork, focus, and problem-solving.
Willow is currently the only operational lost dog tracking dog in Cumbria. We are members of the Lost Dog tracking Network and we are in the process of setting up a lost dog tracking team in Cumbria, with our regional branch Lost Dog Tracking Network Cumbria.
Using specialist scenting skills, this work supports the search for missing dogs by following their unique scent trail and working closely with ground searching teams such as Kenzies K9s.
This exciting development builds on our scentwork expertise.
